Insuring Your Wedding Rings
Let’s face it: The last things you want to lose are your wedding rings. Yet we all know that accidents happen and things get misplaced. With that being said, it’s best to look into ring insurance. There are two options when determining how to go about purchasing ring insurance.
Option #1: The Extension
An extension is an addition to your renter’s or homeowner’s insurance policy. It’s also known as a “rider”. This means your ring will be covered no matter your location.
Option #2: A Company
Insuring your rings through a company is another method. Make sure you choose a company that specializes in jewelry. Talk with your jeweler; they may work with a company who offers more coverage.
Average Cost
Typically your insurance will be $1-$2 for every $100 it would cost to replace the ring. So if the ring costs $9,000 then you’re looking at paying $90-$180 per year to insure it.
Reminders — Here are a few things you should be thinking about as you’re researching insurance for your rings:
–Have your receipt and an appraisal from a certified geologist on hand
– Read the fine print
– Check with your jeweler to see if they work with a preferred insurance company
– Purchase a vault to store unworn jewelry and paperwork
After all is said and done, you’ll feel confident in your decision to purchase ring insurance: It’s always better to be safe than sorry.
