Fave First Dance Songs
When it comes to your wedding day, one of the most important music choices you’ll make is selecting your first dance song. For some couples, it’s as easy as saying yes to the song that has always felt like theirs. For others, it requires a little more thought and maybe even some hours spent listening to potential tracks.
While you can’t go wrong with a tried and true oldie like Etta James’s “At Last,” there are also more modern hits to consider … and even some genres you might not have thought to include in your hunt. We’ve made it easy for you though — with multi-genre playlists that will provide the perfect starting point for your first-dance song search. Happy listening!
1. The Contemporaries
When only a current hit will do, this is the list you’ll want to consult — with everything from Beyonce to Sara Bareilles. Just please excuse — or embrace — our love of Ed Sheeran. It’s out of control, we know, but in the best way possible, right?
2. The Classics
So many oldies, yet so many goodies. Whether you’re a Sinatra fan or just can’t get over the grittiness that is Bob Dylan, these are tunes that are known for their evergreen popularity and will be well-recognized by your guests.
3. The Country Hits
If you’re a couple who lives and breathes county music, chances are you’ll want your first dance song to reflect that. Lucky for you, there are plenty of options out there — from the Alison Krauss & Neil McCoy hits of the early ’90s to more recent releases from Carrie Underwood and Hunter Hayes. Let the “research” begin, y’all.
4. The Covers
There are so many songs out there that instantly recognizable … but why not intrigue your guests with a little mystery? Their eyes will light right up the moment they realize they do, in fact, know (& love!) this song … it was just a diverse enough take on the original to make them question it for a moment.
5. The Indie Gems
Indie music has a universal appeal to it — it’s soft enough for the elders in the crowd, but hip enough for the youngins. Given its diversity, one of these tunes could just be the perfect choice as you glide around the dance floor on your big day.
6. The Pop/Rock Ballads
When you think first dance, you might not be thinking good ‘ole Green Day or the hometown boys of The Black Keys. But, given your options, maybe you should be … because who knew Foo Fighters’ Everlong could be even better acoustic?!
What are some of your favorite options from the playlist? Are there any songs we missed that you think should be on here? Share your comments below!
