Unboxing the Process Behind Unbox the Dress
Did you ever promise your mom you’d wear her wedding dress? Then you saw the shoulder pads and petticoat and changed your mind? Ok, so it probably didn’t have a petticoat, but it might have had stains or yellowing and probably wasn’t your style. Now what? Now, you call Unbox the Dress.
What is Unbox the Dress?
Unbox the Dress transforms wedding gowns into heirloom-quality gifts. It’s so special to have a piece of your mother – or even your grandmother – with you on your wedding day. While Unbox the Dress does not alter dresses, they can create beautiful momentos or accessories out of the fabric from wedding dresses. “It is the perfect way for the modern bride to incorporate her mother or grandmother’s dress into her big day – while still staying true to her individual style,” says Grace, one of the owners and founders of Unbox the Dress.
Odds are, your mom’s dress has been sitting in her closet collecting dust since the wedding day. Yours may end up doing the exact same thing. Thinking about these gorgeous and meaningful dresses just wasting away broke Grace and her mother Lorraine’s hearts. That’s what gave them the idea to start Unbox the Dress. “Wedding dress styles have changed, but the fabric, lace, and embellishments on older gowns are timeless,” Grace says. There are so many gifts that can be made from this old fabric. They created heirlooms that can connect generations of women.
Using your mother’s dress
While you may not end up wearing your mother’s wedding gown, you can do the next best thing. Unbox the Dress can transform your mother or grandmother’s dress into over 30 different items! A white lace clutch is useful during your wedding to carry around lipstick, your phone, and schedule. A veil is a bridal accessory necessity. You could also create a garter, capelet, jewelry roll, flower girl dress, ring bearer pillow, or handkerchief. All of these double as incredible heirlooms to pass on to future generations!
Unbox the Dress has worked with hundreds of dresses of all different styles, conditions, and eras. Grace assures brides that “our team of Graceful Sewers are trained on how to avoid any stains or discoloration to yield the most beautiful end designs.” If a dress isn’t properly preserved, it may show some serious aging and yellowing. If that’s the case, Unbox the Dress can use new satin and adorn it with the lace and other dress embellishments.
What to do with your dress
Speaking of the importance of preserving, the company offers eco-friendly, post-wedding gown cleaning, preservation, and storage! In 25 years when your daughter, nephew, or godchild is tying the knot, your dress will be in pristine condition to create a meaningful momento. Don’t want to wait? “We also offer a collection of darling baby outfits (Christening Gowns & Bonnets, Tutus & Headbands, Little Boy’s Vests, and more), as well as a holiday collection (Angel Tree Toppers, Angel Ornaments, Stockings, etc.).” What an amazing way to remember your wedding day!
