How and Where to Apply for a Marriage License in Northeast Ohio
While you’re spending all this time planning your wedding, you may have forgotten one thing – to apply for your marriage license! Here’s what you need to know and where you should go to make sure your marriage is legal.
If you’re an Ohio resident, apply for your marriage license in the county you live in, not the county in which you’ll be getting married. For out-of-state residents, apply in the county where your ceremony will take place. Because some counties have a waiting period or slow turn-around, you should apply a few weeks early. Not too early, though; if a license is not used within 60 days, it will expire.
Once both of you have signed your license, your Officiant will sign as a witness and send it to the Marriage License Bureau to be authorized. You should request at least three certified copies (they’re certified if they have a raised seal) to use for name changing procedures.
To apply for your license, you’ll need:
- Birth Certificate
- Photo ID
- Proof of Citizenship/Residency
- Death Certificate if widowed
- Divorce Decree if divorced
- Payment for fees – accepted form payments vary from county to county
